Zircon

Color:  Yellow, brown, orange, red, violet, blue, green and colorless

Treatment:  Yellow zircon is heated to improve color.  Brown samples are heated to produce blue, red, and colorless gems.

Deposits: Cambodia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Australia, Tanzania, and Vietnam.

Talismanic Use:  Thought to produce clear thinking.   Yellow samples thought to increase sexual energy and attract lovers. Orange zircon thought to guard against jealousy and envy.  Brown zircon was used as a healing stone.

Moh's Hardness:  6.5 to 7.5   Zircon is a brittle gemstone subject to damage along facet junctions.  The gemstone should be stored separately.

Zircon was the alternate birthstone for the month of December,   The birthstone for December has been changed to Tanzanite.

Zircon is a relatively soft gemstone best used in pendants and earrings.  Zircon has a high refractive index as such colorless zircon can sometimes be confused with diamond.  Zircon is a completely different mineral that synthetic cubic zirconium used as a diamond simulant.  The most common color found in jewelry is a medium blue that can resemble the color of aquamarine or blue topaz.
