Topaz

November’s birthstone, topaz  represent a wealth of golden tones and much more. Topaz occurs in a beautiful array of colors including shades of yellow, pink and blue.

It is believed the gemstone could occur naturally in a blue.   Unfortunately, a blue specimen has not been found.

The blue color commonly seen today is induced by man.  Bombarding topaz with neutrons typically changes a topaz from a colorless or very light yellow to a vibrant blue.

Topaz's name is derived from the Sanskrit word "tapas" meaning "fire".

Its mystical powers are said to empower the wearer with beauty and intelligence. Topaz was believed to protect the wearer from enchantment.  In a powder form it was previously used to treat asthma, insomnia, burns and hemorrhage.

Today it is a popular choice because of its brilliant colors.

Moh's Hardness:  8
