Currently, the citrus shades are heavily promoted in fashion but that doesn't mean these are the colors one should look for in jewelry.  Pink jewelry for example will stand out more when worn with any other color of clothing than pink.

The color of a gemstone should compliment your clothing both in color and intensity.

Bright Red Clothing:  Consider gemstones such as blue sapphire, yellow sapphire, citrine, yellow beryl, tanzanite, amethyst and peridot.  Avoid dark green gemstones such as Tourmaline and red brown garnets.

Orange Clothing:  Bright orange is a bold and lively color which contrasts well with bright gems such as amethyst, peridot, tanzanite, blue sapphire, lapis, pink tourmaline, and tsavorite.

Hot Pink Clothing:  Hot pink is another color that looks best with bright gems.  Consider gemstones like peridot, tanzanite, blue sapphire, yellow sapphire, citrine, and lapis.  Earth tones or gemstones with less intensity look dull in contrast with this strong color.

Soft Pink Clothing:  This muted color looks works best with pastel colored gems such as aquamarine, yellow sapphire, or light purple amethyst.  Avoid peach or brown colored gemstones.

Ice Blue Clothing:  Pastel gems once again complement this color.  Consider gems like yellow sapphire, light purple amethyst, pink tourmaline, pink topaz, or pink spine.  Avoid earth tone gems as well as dark or intense colored gems.

Navy Blue Clothing:  This dark color works well with almost every gemstone.  Consider gems like yellow sapphire, tsavorite, peridot, ruby,  red spinel, rhodolite garnet, blue sapphire, green tourmaline, tanzanite, iolite and lapis.   Soft pastels only work if the gemstones are sufficiently large.

Dark Brown Clothing:  This color works best with bright or earth tone gemstones.  Consider yellow sapphire, light blue sapphire, ruby, peridot, tanzanite, blue sapphire, pink tourmaline amethyst, precious topaz, rhodolite garnet and aquamarine.

Dark Green Clothing:  This color works well with the earthy tones such as rhodolite garnet, citrine, iolite, and precious topaz.  Avoid bright overpowering colors.
